Malaysia has been upgraded to Tier 2 Watch List in the US Department of State 2023 Trafficking in Persons report.
The government's key achievements, especially in light of the Covid19 pandemic, was recognised - its employment of a trauma-informed and victim-centred approach in victim identification and protection; amendments to the anti-trafficking law and identified more victims, amongst others. However, more still needs to be done and recommendations have been made especially in the area of prosecution, better victim identification, improvements in addressing modern slavery especially in the plantation and glove-manufacturing industries.
