Held on 17thApril 2019, the SUHAKAM Forum on Malaysia’s Commitment to International Human Rights Standards and its Challenges, highlighted current human rights issues in Malaysia, and the direction these are taking. The half-day session saw three presentations from SUHAKAM on the Business of Human Rights; Anti-Racism and Non-Discrimination in Malaysia; and the Abolishment of the Death Penalty. Feedback and evaluation from the participants indicate a general perception that Malaysia is following the minimum standards of Human Rights and lacks the commitment and responsibility to implement it more robustly. The team took the opportunity to raise questions on discrimination against migrant women, pregnant women, and the safety and protection of non-Malaysian or stateless children who are particularly vulnerable. The government was strongly urged to look into these matters.
