Global Shepherds Celebrates International Women’s Day 2026: A Space to Connect, Learn, and Grow

Laughter, quiet conversations, and heartfelt stories filled the room as women gathered to celebrate International Women’s Day 2026 under the theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For all Women and Girls.” The gathering brought together local and migrant women from different communities in Keningau, Sabah, creating a space where participants could meet not only as individuals, but as mothers, teachers, caregivers, and community leaders.

What began as a celebration slowly unfolded into something deeper. Through sharing sessions and group activities, women spoke openly about their daily realities balancing responsibilities at home, caring for their families, and supporting their children’s education while navigating financial and personal challenges.

One of the most meaningful moments of the program was the kopitiam-style conversation activity. Sitting together in small groups, participants listened to one another’s stories with honesty and empathy. The discussions encouraged women to reflect on their struggles, hopes, and the strength they carry within themselves. Many participants shared that their greatest role models were their own mothers, women whose sacrifices and resilience continue to inspire them every day.

As conversations deepened, common concerns began to emerge. Financial hardship and health challenges were frequently mentioned, alongside the growing importance of women’s leadership within families and communities. Participants recognised that women often carry the responsibility of holding families together during difficult times, making their role in decision-making and community development especially important.

The gathering also highlighted the value of strong support systems. Participants expressed appreciation for the support provided by parents, Alternative Learning Centre (ALC) and Community Learning Centre (CLC), and collaboration with organisations such as Global Shepherds Berhad as well as government agencies and NGOs. Many also spoke about the importance of proper legal documentation during migration to ensure safety, protection, and access to opportunities.

For several participants whom attending for the first time, the program became an opportunity to build new friendships and strengthen connections between communities from Indonesia, the Philippines, and local groups. The atmosphere throughout the event was filled with warmth, excitement, and encouragement.

More than a one-day celebration, the gathering became a reminder that meaningful change often begins with simple moments of listening, sharing, and standing together. In creating spaces where women feel heard and valued, communities become stronger, more compassionate, and more connected.
