This year’s theme focuses on the role of technology as a tool that can both enable and impede human trafficking.
The crime of human trafficking has truly conquered cyberspace. Sophisticated technology has enabled traffickers to operate across international borders, annonymously and evading detection by authorities. As many activities moved online during the Covid-19 pandemic, so did perpetrators of human trafficking.
Technology and digital platforms, especially social media, are increasingly misused by traffickers as a means to identify, pursue, control and exploit victims; online grooming; fake recruitment ads.
However, in the use of technology also lies great opportunity. It can be used as a positive tool to detect, rescue and support victims of trafficking; digital evidence in prosecution cases; as well as a tool to spread information and raise public awareness.
